What is 100 Quads?

The U.S. consumes approximately 100 quadrillion BTUs of energy, according to the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. This represents nearly one sixth of all energy used in the world, but the US accounts for less than one twentieth of the world's population.

By working creatively and using the latest technologies to improve efficiency of our homes, our commercial buildings, our transportation systems and our industrial processes, we can reduce waste, save money and create a more sustainable planet.

Our program pairs returning military veterans with at-risk young people in a mentoring relationship, while training both in energy efficiency technologies to serve their local communities. The foundation of the 100 Quads program is three pillars: military veterans, young people (especially those involved in the criminal justice system - on parole, on probation or in a diversion program) and energy efficiency workforce training. Energy crews working at the intersection of these three pillars will employ veterans who have dutifully served our country, promote a positive life outcome for returning citizens, and implement energy conservation measures that save money in their communities.


Why 100 quads?

We believe veterans, with proper training, can become role models, advocates, mentors and field supervisors for juveniles from high-risk communities, especially those from the juvenile justice system. We propose training both veterans and youths in energy efficiency technologies, providing knowledge, hope and a career path for juveniles who otherwise have few other options. The veteran-youth energy squads will implement money-saving energy efficiency improvements and retrofit buildings in their local communities. Our targeted communities are currently underserved by existing state and federal energy efficiency programs, therefore our approach brings much-needed cost savings and understanding of the importance of sustainability to these communities.
